Scope of the genus

Plants of the World Online accepts 22 species of Stenocereus. The current list includes S. huastecorum, described in 2018 through a combined analysis of morphological characters, genetic markers and ecological niches [2-WWW] [Alvarado-Sizzo et al. 2018].

Species boundaries

Species boundaries in Stenocereus can be investigated by combining genetic variation, morphology and environmental occurrence. A study of the S. griseus complex analysed nine microsatellite loci in 377 individuals and compared ecological niches with areole and spine characters. Concordance among these data supported the distinctness of Mexican populations described as S. huastecorum. This approach illustrates the value of evaluating several independent lines of evidence when identifying similar columnar cacti [Alvarado-Sizzo et al. 2018].

Roots and seasonality

Research on S. queretaroensis illustrates connections among roots, mycorrhizal fungi and seasonal stem growth. In three natural populations in western Mexico, root colonization and stem phosphorus concentrations changed with the rhythm of the rainy season. Arbuscular colonization was positively associated with stem growth in two of the populations, highlighting the importance of local ecological context [Pimienta-Barrios et al. 2002].

Seeds and human managed landscapes

A study of S. stellatus in Puebla showed that germinability and seed viability change during residence in the soil. In S. pruinosus in the Tehuacán Valley, selection of valued fruit forms and exchange of stems among habitats are important processes. These routes of population maintenance, through seeds and through vegetative material, can be assessed separately in the context of the particular species and study site [Álvarez-Espino et al. 2014] [Parra et al. 2012].
