Generic circumscription

Plants of the World Online recognises Cumarinia as a distinct genus with one species, Cumarinia odorata. This species was also previously published under the names Coryphantha odorata, Neobesseya odorata and Neolloydia odorata. The current record allows these names to be linked to the same accepted species name. [2-WWW] [2-WWW]

Distribution

The natural range includes northeastern Mexico and extends to Jalisco. POWO associates the species primarily with the desert and dry shrubland biome. This information concerns its natural range, which includes varied local conditions. [2-WWW]

Material in comparative studies

Cumarinia belongs to a group of closely related tuberculate Cacteae compared with Coryphantha, Cochemiea and Mammillaria. The 2022 DNA analysis included a sample of C. odorata originating from San Luis Potosí and maintained in the UNAM Botanical Garden. This single sample was used to compare relationships between genera. [Sánchez et al. 2022, pp. 117, 122, 155, appendix 1]

In the 2013 comparison of seed-coat lignins, the authors listed Cumarinia among genera whose seeds examined mostly had typical G/S lignin. The abbreviation denotes guaiacyl and syringyl units derived from the corresponding monolignol alcohols. This is a collective statement about the genera compared. Its scope does not include detailed proportions of these units in a single C. odorata population. [Chen et al. 2013, p. 201–203, 207]
