Two species and historical genus boundaries
In the current POWO treatment, the genus includes Echinocactus platyacanthus and E. horizonthalonius, alongside the hybrid taxon E. ×diabolicus. The former, more broadly circumscribed Echinocactus also included Kroenleinia grusonii (formerly Echinocactus grusonii) and three Homalocephala species. These are H. parryi, H. polycephala and H. texensis, previously described as E. parryi, E. polycephalus and E. texensis. [Vargas-Luna et al. 2018] [2-WWW]
The revision from 2018 combined plastid and nuclear marker data with morphological characters. In the combined analysis, Echinocactus in its strict sense was closest to Astrophytum, while Homalocephala formed the sister lineage to this pair. Kroenleinia grusonii was closer to Ferocactus. Separating the genera therefore organises species according to reconstructed relationships. [Vargas-Luna et al. 2018]
Structure from seedling to adult plant
Adult plants have blunt ribs, dense apical hairs and bell-shaped flowers. In E. platyacanthus, the rib count on a large stem can reach 60, and the flowers are yellow. E. horizonthalonius usually produces eight broad ribs and pink or carmine flowers. Seed-coat shape and sculpturing provide further diagnostic characters. [Vargas-Luna et al. 2018]
Seedlings reveal characters difficult to discern from an adult cactus’s appearance. Echinocactus has rounded cotyledon tips. The small number of spines in young areoles, usually one to four in the material studied, links it with Astrophytum. Such developmental characters complement DNA sequence similarities and allow structural changes to be followed through successive life stages. [Vargas-Luna et al. 2018]
Habitat and the physiological scale
The genus’ range covers dry areas of the southwestern USA and Mexico. The low-growing E. horizonthalonius occupies, among other sites, stony limestone and gypsum surfaces. Studies of E. platyacanthus cover a much wider size scale, from germinating seeds to huge stems. Germination sensitivity to high temperature coexists with seasonal changes in photosynthetic apparatus performance in older plants and favourable orientation of adult stems. Podstawa uprawy pojemnikowej
General RHS recommendations for desert cacti include a bright position, ventilation and a freely draining substrate in a container with drainage. During growth, watering should wet the root ball and allow excess water to drain freely. A cooler rest period is combined with a strong reduction in watering. Sowing conditions are described separately in the species profiles. [1-WWW]
