The genus Kimnachia preserves a distinct lineage of epiphytic cacti that did not belong to Pseudorhipsalis in the chloroplast analysis. Establishing the genus aligned its circumscription with the evolutionary history reconstructed from DNA. The closest placement of this lineage within the larger group remained unresolved. An analysis of four plastid DNA regions covers a broad sample of Hylocereeae and comparative groups. The findings support changes in several generic circumscriptions, separation of Deamia and the union of two Pseudoacanthocereus species with Strophocactus wittii. The paper includes comparisons of stems, roots, flowers and fruits, and the new combinations Strophocactus brasiliensis and S. sicariguensis.
