Habit and stem structure

The classical account of Costa Rican plants under Lemaireocereus aragonii reports a height of 5–6 m and stout branches with 6–8 prominent ribs. Stems are dark green, with the start of each growth increment marked by a bluish band. Areoles carry brown wool and greyish spines. The historical account of Guatemalan L. eichlamii describes more numerous, broadly rounded ribs. Both accounts document variation among plants now included in the broader species concept. [Britton and Rose 1920]

Flowers and seeds

Flowers were described as 6–8 cm long. Numerous stamens are present inside the perianth. In the account of L. aragonii, fruit pulp is white and black seeds measure 5–6 mm. Historical material of L. eichlamii had widely spreading purple inner tepals. Retaining the source name helps associate such details with the appropriate material. [Britton and Rose 1920]

Habitats and regional variation

Flora Mesoamericana records seasonally dry and thorn forests and transitions towards moister vegetation at 0–1000 m. Its April-to-September flowering and fruiting period refers to the regional treatment. It recognizes two subspecies and identifies a need to examine more closely whether their differences are continuous. [Bravo-Hollis et al. 2025]

Historical conservation assessments

POWO displays two historical IUCN assessments. Stenocereus aragonii has category LC, Least Concern, and S. eichlamii DD, Data Deficient. Each concerns the taxon circumscription used in that assessment. [2-WWW]
