Name and relationships
Eriosyce horrida is the name currently accepted by POWO for the lineage that also includes plants formerly called E. curvispina var. tuberisulcata. The 2024 revision connected its characters with a distinct molecular placement. Material from Laguna Verde represents the coastal portion of the studied complex [Walter et al. 2024] [2-WWW].
Diagnostic characters
The green stem reaches about 10–20 cm in diameter. It usually has 14–18 ribs, occasionally up to 20. Stout spines are initially brown and turn grey with age. Radial spines measure 1–2 cm and central spines about 1.5–3 cm. Differences among similar species are best assessed in plants of known provenance [Walter et al. 2024].
Flowers measure about 4–5 cm. Tepals are red or pink and comparatively broad, with a distinct dark-purple central stripe. Their width reaches about 1–1.2 cm. In the revision’s key, perianth characters complement measurements of the stem, ribs and areoles [Walter et al. 2024].
Coast and habitat transformation
Known localities occupy low coastal hills from areas south of Valparaíso to Papudo. Development, roads, forestry and fires reduce habitat. In 2024 the revision’s authors proposed Endangered, EN, with an extent of occurrence below 5000 km² [Walter et al. 2024].
