Spines in the key to the classical group

The 2020 key recognised Cochemiea pondii by three central spines, some with hooked tips, and 20–30 radial spines. The sites given included Cedros and Natividad islands. These traits distinguished six species of the narrow Cochemiea of that time. [García Morales et al. 2020, p. 5, species key]

Material in the plastid tree

In the 2021 plastid analysis, samples of C. pondii (identified as Mammillaria pondii) formed a lineage close to the pair C. maritima and C. setispina. The name history also includes former pondii subspecies now accepted in POWO as separate species. [Breslin et al. 2021, Breslin et al., p. 313, fig. 2. POWO, as of 11 October 2026] [2-WWW]
