Distribution and growth habit

Botanical description

Lindsay associated Cochemiea pondii with Cedros and Natividad islands on the Pacific side of the Baja California peninsula. He described loose clumps whose stems reached 40 cm in length. New branches arose along older, reclining axes. [Lindsay 1959, file p. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

Spines and flowers

Botanical description

The radial spines form two series, with shorter outer spines and 5–8 longer, erect inner spines. There are usually three central spines, 2–4 cm long, including two hooked ones. The tubular scarlet flowers reach about 5 cm, and the stamens and pistil project beyond the perianth. [Lindsay 1959, file p. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]
