The protologue of Cochemiea thomasii from Cosalá municipality in Sinaloa, based on field studies in 2018 and 2019, herbarium material and seed observations under a scanning microscope. It describes pendent stems, straight spines, red flowers, laterally splitting fruits and seeds. It compares the species with C. halei, documents its rocky habitat in deciduous forest and presents a key to six species in the narrow generic circumscription used at the time.
