One central spine in the former key

In the 2020 key to the narrowly circumscribed genus, Cochemiea poselgeri was distinguished by one central spine and 7–9 radial spines. The central spine belonged to the group with a hooked tip. The given range extended from Santa Rosalía to Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur. The set concerns the classical group of red-flowering species covered by that key. [García Morales et al. 2020, p. 5, species key]

Material in the plastid tree

In the 2021 tree, C. poselgeri material formed a pair with C. halei, whose central spines are straight. The difference in spine form in closely related samples shows the need to assess many traits together. Samples were examined under the historical name Mammillaria poselgeri.
