Name, synonyms and range
Plants of the World Online accepts the name Acharagma roseanum (Boed.) E.F.Anderson and reports its natural occurrence in the Mexican state of Nuevo León, in deserts and dry scrub. The names Escobaria roseana, Coryphantha roseana and Acharagma huasteca belong to the synonymy of this species. In the experiment described in 2018, the material was identified as Acharagma roseana ssp. roseana. The results are assigned here to A. roseanum. Two-year-old plants prepared for transfer
Salas Cruz and colleagues compared eight cactus species in Linares, Nuevo León. The whole experiment included 208 plants, with three to five in each experimental unit, depending on the available material. Two-year-old plants of similar size and condition were selected for transfer. A. roseanum was one of eight taxa assessed separately. [Salas Cruz et al. 2018, pp. 2–3]
Preparation began with seedlings in a very humid environment, after which watering intervals were gradually extended in the greenhouse. Before the field experiment, plants were acclimatised to direct sunlight in the botanical garden for eight weeks. The entire sequence covered both root and stem development and changes in water and light conditions. [Salas Cruz et al. 2018, p. 3, section 2.3]
Substrate, exposure and survival
Three substrates were compared, perlite with peat 1:1, zeolite with peat 1:1, and local soil. Each was combined with eastern and western exposure. Observation lasted 24 weeks. Plants remained in 10 × 10 cm pots placed in wooden cages covered with fine mesh, and were watered during the experiment. Height and diameter were assessed on successive dates, while survival was tracked separately. [Salas Cruz et al. 2018, p. 3–5, ryc. 1–2]
For A. roseanum, both the results text and the figure indicate complete survival in the west–zeolite with peat and east–perlite with peat treatments. Each combination had a small sample, within the range of three to five plants given for experimental units. The result documents the successful transition of prepared young plants through six months under these conditions. [Salas Cruz et al. 2018, p. 3–5, ryc. 2]
Scope of the field experiment
The acclimatisation stages, watering and protection of the pots together formed the conditions under which high survival was obtained. The authors considered using such comparisons for cactus conservation. The experiment itself concerned moving container plants to an outdoor site. It did not track their subsequent reproduction or lasting population restoration after planting in natural soil. [Salas Cruz et al. 2018, p. 3, 7–9]
