Name and range
Plants of the World Online accepts Pelecyphora macromeris (Engelm.) D.Aquino & Dan.Sánchez. The combination was published in 2022. Its natural range extends from southern New Mexico to western Texas and northeastern Mexico. The subspecies macromeris and runyonii are accepted. Synonyms include Coryphantha macromeris, Mammillaria macromeris and Lepidocoryphantha macromeris. [2-WWW]
Plants for chemical analysis
Cabañas-García and colleagues studied Pelecyphora macromeris (Coryphantha macromeris in the 2019 publication) from the in vitro culture bank of the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. Plants were kept for a year on MS with 3% sucrose, at 25°C with a sixteen-hour day. After acclimatisation, they remained another year in the greenhouse before material collection. A voucher specimen was deposited as HUAA 6386. Material was identified at species level. [Cabañas-García et al. 2019, p. 13, Plant Material]
Compounds in roots and stems
Roots and above-ground parts were separated, dried for a week at 40°C and extracted with methanol. UHPLC–MS/MS analysis separated 69 compound signals. Sixty received tentative identifications based on accurate ion mass, fragmentation, UV spectra and comparisons with the literature. Nine were left unknown. Assignments concern components of the extract mixture and have the confidence level of tentative identification. [Cabañas-García et al. 2019, p. 2–10, tab. 1; p. 13–14, Metody]
Twenty-six signals were found only in above-ground parts, nineteen only in roots and twenty-four in both fractions. Repeated assignments included ferulic acid and its derivatives, and the acid termed piscidic acid in the publication and its derivatives. The number of detected signals describes diversity in the qualitative extract profiles. [Cabañas-García et al. 2019, pp. 2–12, Table 1]
Scope of conclusions on applications
The study provided chemical characterisation of greenhouse material. Its experimental part covered extract analysis, while the biological properties of individual compounds were discussed using other publications. The results concern the proposed chemical composition and the distribution of signals between roots and above-ground parts. [Cabañas-García et al. 2019, pp. 11–14, Discussion and conclusions]
