Accepted name and circumscription
Mammillaria huitzilopochtli D.R.Hunt is an accepted species with a natural range in Oaxaca, Mexico. The name was published in 1979. POWO recognises the nominate subspecies huitzilopochtli and subsp. niduliformis. The 2006 ecological comparison concerns the species, without dividing results between these subspecies. Strome mikrosiedliska
The analysis of ten species from the Tehuacán valley included six sites of M. huitzilopochtli. Elevation and slope of the occupied surfaces were measured. The authors identified it, alongside M. crucigera, as one of two species closely associated with rocky habitats and occurring at the lowest elevations in the sample compared. [Martorell and Patiño 2006, p. 545, 550]
For M. huitzilopochtli sites alone, the correlation between elevation and slope was 0.408 with p = 0.364 and was not significant. The association between lower elevations and steeper substrates emerged only when comparing the means of ten species. This level of comparison describes differences between species while retaining separate information on variation among their sites. [Martorell and Patiño 2006, p. 547–549, tabela 1]
Dependence on rock microclimate
The thermal experiment described in the same paper was conducted on M. crucigera. Distribution data were collected for M. huitzilopochtli, without stem-temperature measurements. Its rocky sites are part of the comparison on which the authors base their hypothesis about the thermal importance of steep surfaces. The values of 9.9°C and 14.4°C measured in the M. crucigera experiment were not assigned to this plant. [Martorell and Patiño 2006, p. 543–550]
