Name and Peruvian range
Plants of the World Online accepts Armatocereus rauhii Backeb. and lists its native occurrence in Peru. It grows as a succulent shrub or tree. The detailed observation of its interaction with a bird comes from the dry forest of the Marañón valley, at Coco Chico in Cajamarca. Fruits as food for a parrot
Roncal-Rabanal and colleagues described eight opportunistic records of feeding by Forpus xanthops from 2013–2018. Plants were identified in the field, and more difficult identifications were compared with herbarium collections. One record concerned A. rauhii. On 19 January 2014 at 9.40 a.m., at 922 m elevation, the bird was observed and photographed eating fruit pulp and seeds. [Roncal-Rabanal et al. 2020, pp. 238–239, item 4, Figure 5]
The record confirms use of the fruit as food. Seed fate after consumption, viability and subsequent germination lie outside the scope of this note. The bird's contribution to seed dispersal or destruction therefore requires a separate study. This observation links a particular cactus species, locality and feeding behaviour.
