Accepted name

Plants of the World Online accepts Thelocactus rinconensis as a distinct species. Its synonymy includes Echinocactus rinconensis and Thelocactus lophothele. These names allow material described in older literature to be located. [2-WWW]

The wettest quarter

In the T. rinconensis model, precipitation in the wettest quarter was the main variable, with a permutation importance of 58.4%. Annual temperature range followed, at 15.9%. This pattern distinguished the species' profile from models dominated by isothermality. [Mosco 2019, p. 6, Tables 1–2]

The model was built from 47 occurrence records and ten climatic and topographic variables. Niche breadth, estimated using the dimensionless Levins index, was 0.062. Variable importance was calculated by permuting data in the Maxent model. The results concern the regional profile of the sites. The analysis did not experimentally examine stem temperature tolerance or responses to watering. [Mosco 2019, p. 3–6, 10–12]
