Accepted name
Plants of the World Online accepts Thelocactus multicephalus as a distinct species. Its synonymy includes Thelocactus rinconensis subsp. multicephalus. This name allows material described in older literature to be located. [2-WWW]
Temperature variation and topography
In the model for T. multicephalus, isothermality (33%) and minimum temperature of the coldest month (24%) had the greatest permutation importance. The terrain ruggedness index reached 7.4%, the highest value in the set compared. The analysis covered 13 occurrence records. Isothermality is the ratio of mean daily temperature range to annual range, multiplied by 100. [Mosco 2019, p. 6, Tables 1–2]
The model was built from 13 occurrence records and ten climatic and topographic variables. Niche breadth, estimated using the dimensionless Levins index, was 0.100. Variable importance was calculated by permuting data in the Maxent model. The results concern the regional profile of the sites. The analysis did not experimentally examine stem temperature tolerance or responses to watering. [Mosco 2019, p. 3–6, 10–12]
