Accepted name
Plants of the World Online accepts Thelocactus hastifer as a distinct species. Its synonymy includes Echinocactus hastifer and Ferocactus hastifer. These names allow material described in older literature to be located. [2-WWW]
Isothermality and limited occurrence records
For T. hastifer, isothermality had a permutation importance of 77.8%, the highest among the nine species analysed. Estimated niche breadth was relatively large despite the small number of known sites. The author noted possible overestimation of potential range with such limited data. Isothermality is the ratio of mean daily temperature range to annual range, multiplied by 100. [Mosco 2019, p. 6, Tables 1–2]
The model was built from 11 occurrence records and ten climatic and topographic variables. Niche breadth, estimated using the dimensionless Levins index, was 0.178. Variable importance was calculated by permuting data in the Maxent model. The results concern the regional profile of the sites. The analysis did not experimentally examine stem temperature tolerance or responses to watering. [Mosco 2019, p. 3–6, 10–12]
