Current treatment of the name pentacanthus
Plants of the World Online accepts Stenocactus obvallatus (DC.) A.Berger and includes S. pentacanthus and Echinofossulocactus pentacanthus among its synonyms. The analysis of the Bajío hybrid used the name S. pentacanthus. Relating this historical identification to the current name preserves the proper scope of data on the populations studied. [2-WWW]
Parental material in the hybrid analysis
In 56 adult plants from three populations, identified in the study as S. pentacanthus, complete rib number ranged from 30–53, averaging 37 ± 4.9, expressed as mean ± standard deviation. The occurrence of this material with S. coptonogonus and intermediate plants supported the proposed origin of S. × irregularis. Parentage was described on the basis of morphometrics and field observations. [González-Zamora et al. 2023, p. 90–99, tabela V]
Weevil feeding in Tierra Blanca
In Tierra Blanca, Guanajuato, adult Gerstaeckeria bifasciata ate tissues on rib crests and parts of buds and flowers of S. obvallatus. In November 2017, 337 plants on 900 m² were inventoried, and their survival was reassessed a year later. No significant relationship was found between the number of damaged ribs and the probability of death. This is a field observation of a specific population. Mechanisms of damage tolerance remained the authors' interpretation. [Segura-Venegas and Jiménez-Sierra 2022, pp. 96–99]
