In the NMR spectrum of the walls of the Pelecyphora zilziana seeds examined (Escobaria zilziana in the article), the proportions of lignin units were estimated at about 63% 5H and 37% S, with a trace of G. About 84% of the linkages analysed corresponded to benzodioxane structures. The data specify the proportions of polymer components in the sample, rather than the mass fraction of lignin in the seed. [Chen et al. 2013, p. 206–208, ryc. 4E]

The predominance of 5H and presence of S distinguished this material from the almost homogeneous 5H lignin in the P. dasyacantha seeds examined. The authors left open whether 5H and S units form a single mixed polymer or occur as different polymers in the walls. Resolving this would require further study of linkages and component distribution. [Chen et al. 2013, p. 207–209]
