The species and the studied habitat
Leptocereus wrightii is a Cuban species. The 2020 analysis placed it in a lineage also including L. leonii and L. scopulophilus, with orange to pale-pink flowers. For the germination study published in 2025, seeds were collected at Boca de Jaruco, Mayabeque Province, at 29 m elevation. This was a coastal population. Seeds were collected and sown in May 2017. [Barrios et al. 2020a, pp. 8, 10 in the 2020 study, p. 3 and Table 1 in the 2025 study] [Barrios et al. 2025, pp. 8, 10 in the 2020 study, p. 3 and Table 1 in the 2025 study]
Germination under alternating temperatures
With light for 8 hours per day on 1% agar, germination after 28 days was 66.28 ± 11.51% at 25°C, 53.14 ± 11.25% at 25/30°C and 1.14 ± 1.95% at 25/35°C. Each treatment had 7 replicates of 25 seeds. Germination onset in the warmest of these treatments was markedly later. Germination in darkness at 25°C was 0%. The results concern seeds and do not establish an overwintering temperature for adult plants. [Barrios et al. 2025, pp. 3–4, 7, Table 2]
Viability after a restrictive period
Further germination occurred when seeds were transferred from 25/35°C and 25/40°C to 25°C in light. Recovery after 25/45°C was not assessed for this lot. The missing table entry denotes an unmeasured outcome, rather than absence of germination capacity. The strong recovery in some treatments shows that heat inhibition and seed death are distinct events. [Barrios et al. 2025, pp. 7–9, Fig. 2, Table 3]
