Current name
Cruz, Arias and Terrazas established the combination Disocactus anguliger in 2016. It is based on Lemaire’s name Phyllocactus anguliger. The historical name Epiphyllum anguliger remains useful for finding publications and cultivation records. Current POWO accepts the species in Disocactus. Molecular relationships
The study compared six chloroplast markers using different tree reconstruction methods. Material identified as Epiphyllum anguliger, E. crenatum and E. lepidocarpum fell within the Disocactus lineage. The arrangement of finer branches depended on the analysis, and some intrageneric relationships had weak support. [Cruz et al. 2016, pp.149–155]
Characters and distribution in the revision
The revision identifies flexible stem spines and flowers with two sets of stamens as characters shared with other Disocactus members. D. anguliger material was associated with western Mexico, including Guerrero, Jalisco, Nayarit and Oaxaca. Chloroplast tree placement and morphological characters are used here to explain the current classification. [Cruz et al. 2016, pp.154–155]
