Structure and identification

The monograph describes columnar stems with a thin root neck, a taproot and stolons. Tubercles are relatively loosely arranged, narrow and partly keeled, making the yellow-orange axillary glands clearly visible. Lateral spines are yellowish white, and central ones are longer and horn-coloured. Flowers are pale yellow, smaller than the broad flowers of C. erecta. Stolons contribute to broad clusters of slender stems. [Dicht and Lüthy 2005, p. 60–61]

Habitat and variation

The monograph indicates limestone slopes and hilltops in Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí. The species is morphologically close to C. jalpanensis. The authors of the 2016 analysis showed considerable overlap in the dimensions of the two groups, describing qualitative differences in tubercle, spine and flower shape. Both species remain separate in the current list of names.
