Structure and identification

Stems are spherical and about 8 cm tall and in diameter in the monograph. Tubercles are conical, rhomboid at the base and flattened above. Lateral spines are partly translucent, yellowish or white. Their darker tips are particularly marked in the upper part of the areole. Usually three or four central spines project in different directions, with the longest pointing forwards and slightly downwards. Flowers have a pale perianth, and fruits are green and juicy. [Dicht and Lüthy 2005, p. 166–167]

Habitat and variation

The monograph's authors checked sites in Coahuila, Durango and Chihuahua. They associate the species with alluvial substrates on plains and gentle ridges. Branching in different parts of the stem gives groups a less regular shape than clusters with offsets only at the base. [Dicht and Lüthy 2005, p. 166–167]
