Castellanosia caineana

Name and range

Plants of the World Online accepts Castellanosia caineana Cárdenas. Browningia caineana is a synonym. Its native range covers Bolivia and Paraguay. POWO assigns the plant to deserts and dry shrublands. [2-WWW]

Separation from Browningia

In Nyffeler’s 2002 analysis, sequences from Castellanosia caineana fell in a different principal lineage from the sampled Browningia. The result did not support merging the two genera. It concerned plastid data, and some generic relationships within the broader group remained unresolved. [Nyffeler 2002, pp. 315–319, 322]

The species also appears in Konrad Szychowski's private material archive. [Kaktusy i Inne 2004, file p. 30]

Phylogenetic relationships in the cactus family (Cactaceae) based on evidence from trnK/matK and trnL–trnF sequences

Nyffeler R., Phylogenetic relationships in the cactus family (Cactaceae) based on evidence from trnK/matK and trnL–trnF sequences, American Journal of Botany, 2002, 89(2):312-326, doi: 10.3732/ajb.89.2.312

An analysis of plastid trnK/matK and trnL–trnF sequences compares major Cactaceae lineages. It discusses the circumscription of traditional groups, the position of Blossfeldia and separation of Castellanosia from Browningia. Resolution of some generic relationships remains limited.
