Names and species limits

In the study by Rosas-Reinhold, Sánchez and Arias, samples identified as Aporocactus martianus and A. conzattii belonged to one lineage. Molecular variation in some populations was not associated with a distinct morphological diagnosis. The authors accepted a single species under the name A. martianus, also accepted by POWO. Flowers and geography

The studied plants had actinomorphic flowers with light to deep red tepals. Documented populations occurred from central Veracruz to Oaxaca. The revision associated this lineage with the southern part of the generic range. [Rosas-Reinhold et al. 2022, pp.430–432, Fig.3 i5]

Habitat and climatic niche

The genus occurs in cloud and pine–oak forests, on trees or rocky substrates. The authors compared climatic niche models for both species and found them to differ in the analysed dataset. The model describes associations between known localities and climatic variables. It is distinct from a direct experiment measuring tolerance in potted plants.
