Cutting polarity
POLARITY AND ROOT REGENERATION
Marking the base
Record the orientation before dividing a long stem. This applies especially to fragments without an apex. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
Wound healing
Limiting water loss and forming a barrier at the wound precede heavy watering. Assess the time needed by the condition of the tissues. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
Adventitious roots
Once rooting begins, the need for water and oxygen in the substrate increases. New roots do not prove that a cutting is completely healthy. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
The diagram shows a typical stem cutting placed upright. Horizontal rooting is sometimes possible, but is not a rule for all cacti. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
