Odrost
Separation at a constriction limits the wound. If the offset has roots, protect them during the procedure. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
Stem fragment
A healthy fragment must retain tissues capable of growth. The cutting site is chosen according to stem structure, with no single length suitable for all species. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
A stem segment or leafy shoot
The flat segments of epiphytic cacti are stems. In leafy cacti, water loss through the retained leaves must be considered. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
The dashed copper mark shows an example separation site. Check the health of the material and clean the tool before the procedure. [Fleischer and Schütz 1978] [Druege et al. 2019]
Sequence and conditions
- Retain a healthy piece for rooting. The cut surface needs to heal and form a protective barrier. The dry layer on the wound includes altered tissues and is not synonymous with callus. [Kłosiński 2006, file p. 17, 18, 19]
- The author placed the piece above gravel a few millimetres in size in a jar with a small amount of water at the bottom. The surface beneath the plant was to remain dry. The aim was a more humid atmosphere without wetting the wound. [Kłosiński 2006, file p. 17, 18, 19]
- The source specifies that temperature should not exceed 35°C. In practical interpretation, use bright, diffuse light and temperature control. A closed jar in the sun can overheat. [Kłosiński 2006, file p. 17, 18, 19]
- The author waited up to about 2 months. Once roots about 1 cm long appeared, he moved the plant to a rapidly drying mix. [Kłosiński 2006, file p. 17, 18, 19]
- Once roots appear, increase water availability in line with their development and the rate at which the substrate dries. A freshly rooted plant remains vulnerable to rot. [Kłosiński 2006, file p. 17, 18, 19]
Scope of the method
A collector's method, without a success percentage or control.
A retained piece of living rootstock requires a separate record. It is not the same as roots produced by the scion.
