Distribution and structure
The species occurs in central-southern Bahia and northern Minas Gerais, in the southern Caatinga. Characteristic sites lie on limestone outcrops in the São Francisco valley. Its shrubby to tree-like habit, fleshy leaves and armed areoles resemble Q. verticillata, from which it differs in smaller size and geographic location. [Taylor et al. 2026]
Flowers
Flowers are pink to purple, open during the day and arise laterally on stems. The authors of the 2026 comparison associate this character set with a likely contribution from bees. Newly described Q. pelodaserra has white flowers that open in the evening and cluster at shoot tips. Pollination-type assessment in this study was based on floral characters. [Taylor et al. 2026]
Gniazda Polistes versicolor
Studies conducted from February to December 2021 in northern Minas Gerais found Polistes versicolor nests on stems of this cactus. Across the study, thirty colonies were found on eight plant species. The preferred cactus was Cereus jamacaru, while Q. zehntneri was one of the newly documented substrates. [Moura et al. 2022]
The observation concerns the plant's structural function as a site for nest attachment. The study analysed substrate choice by wasps. The colony's effect on herbivore damage to the cactus or its reproduction remains a separate research question. [Moura et al. 2022]
