Habit and distribution

Cylindrical segments with distinct tubercles form a shrub or small tree. Perennial axes become woody, while young ones remain green and fleshy. The species occurs in dry regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. The older name Opuntia imbricata leads to much of the field literature. A nectar-secreting areole

Extrafloral nectaries are modified spines in young areoles. They comprise an epidermis, nectary parenchyma and deeper subnectary parenchyma, near bundles with xylem and phloem. Hairs, crystal-containing cells and mucilage structures accompany them. This organisation links the small gland to water management and substance transport throughout the stem. [Ávila-Argáez et al. 2019]

In San Luis Potosí, watering over 20 weeks increased visiting-ant abundance. Liometopum apiculatum dominated. Crematogaster opuntiae and Pseudomyrmex pallidus were also found. Results concerned insect activity and water availability. Nectar quantity remained outside the scope of successful measurement because secretion volume was small and viscosity high. [Ávila-Argáez et al. 2019]

The insect community in time and space

In a separate experiment on 40 plants, 6286 insects from 18 taxa were recorded. Watering increased a diversity measure accounting for the proportions of individual taxa, with very similar total visitor numbers in both treatments. Observation time strongly differentiated community composition. [Ramírez-Hernández et al. 2021]

Long-term observations in Sevilleta showed an advantage of L. apiculatum in access to cacti at higher cactus density. Study of the neighbouring ant community showed weaker changes. Basic diversity and overall community-composition measures remained similar. In the Albuquerque area, ant behaviour towards test prey differed between urban and non-urban sites. Budowa drewna

An open network of wood forms the dry stem skeleton. Vessels, fibres and wood rays run through its walls, and successive scales of porosity extend to cell lumina and wall pits. The 2024 micromechanical study concerned wood seasoned for at least two years. Its parameters describe dry skeletal material. [Morankar et al. 2024]

Research on applications of this species is presented in a separate article in the “Biotechnology and applications” section. [Coutiño Laguna et al. 2022]

Overwintering in a garden trial

In an experiment in Bozeni, Romania, the authors recorded no damage in the sheltered treatment of the material examined. The trial included ten plants per treatment, one season and a reported minimum air temperature of −21.9°C. The result concerns this material and shelter. Applying it to other provenances requires knowledge of the winter's course, moisture and tissue temperatures. [Szekely-Varga et al. 2022]

Growing site and material provenance

In garden cultivation, a sunny site, efficient drainage of excess water and adequate space for perennial branches matter. Plant provenance selection and winter-shelter conditions affect cultivation outcomes in a cold climate. Documentation should link the material's name with seasonal conditions, temperature, substrate moisture, shelter presence and plant condition after thawing. [4-WWW] [Szekely-Varga et al. 2022]

Spiny branches need space away from paths. Detached segments retain rooting potential, so they are collected into a container during repotting and pruning. The propagation method explains the importance of controlling stem fragments when moving plants and managing treatment remains. [4-WWW] [Majure et al. 2019]
