Description and meaning of the name

Archived descriptions distinguish rounded, less projecting ribs and a broad growth form. The epithet is now a synonym of the nominate subspecies. Large-flower data come from older descriptions without fully documented samples. Costa also appears with a horticultural form in the Cactus Art catalogue and remains a separate cultivated label.
