Recognition among the parental plants

The suspected hybrids grew together with both parental species in Oaxaca. Fruits of E. chiotilla bear characteristic papery bracts, while P. chichipe fruits have spines. The studied hybrids combined short, broad bracts with spines. Flowers and ribs provided further comparative characters. These observations formed the starting point for testing the plants’ origin. [Cruz-Zamora et al. 2017]

Morphology and DNA markers

Cruz-Zamora and colleagues compared characters of 30 E. chiotilla plants, 30 P. chichipe plants and four putative hybrids. They also used AFLP analysis, which detects variation in DNA fragment patterns following restriction and amplification. Concordance between morphological and molecular findings supported a hybrid origin. Intermediate features therefore gained independent support from genetic data. [Cruz-Zamora et al. 2017]

Crossing and offspring

Hand-pollination between the parental species produced fruits and viable seeds. Backcrosses between hybrids and parental plants also succeeded. The results demonstrate the potential for genes to pass into later generations. Transfer of genetic material from one species into populations of another through hybridization followed by backcrossing is termed introgression. [Cruz-Zamora et al. 2017]

The same hybrids also produced aborted fruits and seeds with abnormal embryo development. Fertile crossing therefore coexisted with failure of some reproductive structures. The experiment confirms the potential for gene exchange, while the actual extent of introgression in the natural population requires direct estimation. [Cruz-Zamora et al. 2017]

The hybrid name

The 2017 description established the name ×Polascontria huajuapensis. The × symbol denotes hybrid origin, and the generic name combines Polaskia and Escontria. POWO, checked on 16 October 2026, continues to accept both the hybrid name and the formula Escontria chiotilla × Polaskia chichipe. This account concerns that particular species combination and the Oaxaca sites. [Cruz-Zamora et al. 2017] [2-WWW]

×Polascontria (Cactaceae), a nothogenus that represents the gene flow between Escontria and Polaskia

Cruz-Zamora Y., Cruz-García F., Orozco-Arroyo G., Reyes-Santiago J., Martínez-Castilla L. P., Wegier A., Vázquez-Santana S., ×Polascontria (Cactaceae), a nothogenus that represents the gene flow between Escontria and Polaskia, Phytotaxa, 2017, 295(2):141-158, doi: 10.11646/phytotaxa.295.2.3

Morphological evidence, AFLP markers and controlled crosses support a hybrid origin for plants from Mixteca Baja in Oaxaca. The authors describe ×Polascontria huajuapensis as a hybrid between Escontria chiotilla and Polaskia chichipe. Crosses and backcrosses produced viable seeds, while some hybrid fruits and seeds showed developmental abnormalities.
