Rozpoznanie
The flattened stem segments have crenate margins. The flowers are orange to magenta and smaller than those of L. micrantha. An important feature in the 2010 key is the absence of a developed receptacular tube, the elongated portion surrounding the bases of the floral organs. The flower-bearing areoles remain near the surface. [Korotkova et al. 2010, p. 166]
Compared with L. incachacana, the plant differs in its superficial areoles and the absence of that species' characteristic deep depressions filled with dense hairs. Flower colour distinguishes it from L. brevispina. These features allow use of the 2010 key within the four species it covers. [Korotkova et al. 2010, p. 166]
Origin and scope of knowledge
The species is native to Bolivia. The type of the original name, Hariota crenata, is associated with material from Yungas in the department of La Paz, collected in 1885. The 2010 account also discusses a plant from near Coroico that had previously been maintained in a botanical collection. [2-WWW] [Korotkova et al. 2010, p. 162, 167]
In the 2010 analysis, the position of L. crenata was determined from morphology and documentation. Material of this species was not sequenced. DNA results for the other three species provide context for separating the genus, while the description of L. crenata retains its own morphological basis. [Korotkova et al. 2010, p. 162–163]
Historia nazwy
The accepted combination is Lymanbensonia crenata (formerly Hariota crenata, and Pfeiffera crenata in some accounts). The species remains distinct in POWO. Atlas searches include these older names. [2-WWW] [Korotkova et al. 2010]
