A revision of Epithelantha combining morphometry of 195 adult plants from 39 sites, seed traits under electron microscopy and analysis of four plastid markers. The authors recognise ten species, propose the combinations E. potosina and E. pulchra and clarify typification of older names. Comparative descriptions, illustrations and a key provide areole, spine, root and flower traits for all ten accepted species. The paper also explains the limited resolution of plastid DNA in E. micromeris and E. cryptica.
