A field comparison of four columnar cacti in Sonora documents arbuscular mycorrhiza in roots beneath Olneya tesota trees and outside their canopies. In the pooled sample, root colonization and fungal tissue occupancy were higher beneath trees, as was the number of soil spores. The direction of the colonization difference nevertheless depended on cactus species. The observational study also describes soil properties and root hairs, keeping association distinct from experimental demonstration of benefit.
