The study combines analysis of Peniocereus greggii root sterols with experiments in mice, INS-1E cells and C2C12 myotubes. Desoxyviperidone enhances the insulin response in the animal model used, while other sterols increase insulin secretion in culture. The work also includes cellular respiration measurements and chromatographic control of extract composition. The authors discuss possible formation of compound 6 during alkaline extraction.
