The central Mexican study combines observations of flowers, nectar secretion and animal visits with controlled pollination. Flowers opened at night and remained available the following day. Bats and hummingbirds participated in pollen transfer, and access by both groups was associated with higher fruit set than access restricted to night or day visitors. Self-pollination produced no fruits in the population studied.
