Article2006

Schlumpberger B. O., Clery R. A., Barthlott W., A Unique Cactus with Scented and Possibly Bat-Dispersed Fruits: Rhipsalis juengeri, Plant Biology, 2006, 8(2):265-270, doi: 10.1055/s-2005-873045

Fruit scent was studied in one Rhipsalis juengeri clone cultivated in Bonn. Chromatography, mass spectrometry and olfactory assessment revealed a ketone-dominated volatile mixture and compounds contributing to a blackcurrant-like aroma. The authors proposed bat dispersal from fruit traits without observational confirmation of that mechanism.
