The protologue of Rhipsalis flagelliformis combines morphological description with evidence of habitat fragmentation in Rio de Janeiro. Comparison of seven plastid regions supports its placement in Goniorhipsalis, while stem characters distinguish it from similar plants. The authors interpret retention of juvenile-like morphology in adults as neoteny and provide a contemporary assessment of threat.
