The study of three chloroplast regions, matK, psbA–trnH and atpB–rbcL, distinguishes the Strombocactus taxa studied. In the analysis of 46 terminal units, S. corregidorae falls outside the clade containing S. disciformis and other genera. The authors propose the genus Chichimecactus on this basis.
