A field study of eleven populations in the Tehuantepec basin combines rock and soil analyses with mineral identification in cactus tissues. The historically distinguished Cephalocereus apicicephalium, C. nizandensis and C. totolapensis occupied different substrates and slope positions. Weddellite was detected in the tissues, while possible functional roles of the minerals were discussed as hypotheses.
