The authors combined sequences of seven plastid regions with structural characters of Mexican columnar cacti. The reconstructions support including the former genera Neobuxbaumia and Pseudomitrocereus within Cephalocereus. The study includes diagnoses, typifications and a species key under the authors’ 2017 circumscription.
