A full revision of Austrocactus combining herbarium material, field observations, morphology and ddRADseq. The analysis of 44 samples includes species and morphological forms, and uses two approaches to tree reconstruction. The authors propose 17 species, describe five new ones, distinguish two subgenera and three sections, and provide a key, descriptions, typifications and ranges. The discussion presents incomplete separation of some lineages and a hypothesis of hybrid origin for A. implexus. The treatment of A. longicarpus as a species differs from its subspecies rank in POWO.
