The protologue of Cumulopuntia mollispina, endemic to the Río Yauca valley, includes a diagnosis, descriptions of stems, fruits and seeds, and a comparison with nearby taxa. Field accounts document soft spines, compact growth, seedling recruitment after rain and a very small known range. The flower description was based on dried remains.
