Seventeen months of root sap-flow measurements in four life forms in the dry forest of Laipuna, Ecuador. Armatocereus laetus responded rapidly to small rainfall events and also took up water during the day. Sensors were mounted on roots 2–6 mm in diameter. Because of data gaps, the authors analyse the most complete record from one root per species, and their mechanistic explanations partly rely on hypotheses.
