Name and distribution

POWO identifies Antofagasta in Chile as the species' native range. The plant is a succulent subshrub. Synonyms include Tephrocactus conoideus, Opuntia conoidea and Maihueniopsis tarapacana. Linking these names helps locate materials published under different genus treatments. [2-WWW]

Recovering a virus from a transcriptome

Baek and coauthors searched public plant RNA data. In material assigned to M. conoidea, they reconstructed a sequence placed in a group related to Bevemovirus based on genome structure and phylogeny. The analysis included the predicted polyprotein, its cleavage sites and the additional P3N-PIPO product. [Baek et al. 2025]

Viral RNA was found by analysing existing reads. The paper was not a cactus infection experiment and does not describe a symptom complex characteristic of this species. When assessing a particular plant, such a finding provides a starting point for diagnostic studies that can then establish infection frequency and consequences. [Baek et al. 2025]

Relationships of virus and host

The relationship trees of the viruses studied showed agreement with relationships among their host plants. The authors proposed persistence of the virus–host association during diversification of plant lineages and possible vertical transmission. This hypothesis requires direct testing of the transmission route, for example from the maternal plant to offspring. [Baek et al. 2025]
