Habit and range
Plants form branched shrubs with cylindrical segments and sheathed spines. The range includes southern California and the northern part of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. The earlier name Opuntia wolfii leads to the original species description. Reproductive biology studies were conducted in the Mountain Springs population in Imperial County, among others. Functional dioecy
Flowers of both sexes contain structures resembling stamens and a pistil, but their fertility is separated. Female flowers have sterile anthers, and male flowers reduced female function. The species is hexaploid. In observations, perianth colour ranged continuously from green through yellow and orange to red. [Ramadoss et al. 2023]
Male flowers were on average larger and more often green-yellow, while female flowers were more often orange or red. Colour ranges partly overlapped. In field trials, insects visited male flowers more often, but flower number per plant remained similar in both sexes. [Ramadoss et al. 2023]
Fluorescence and pollen movement
Anthers of female flowers emitted stronger green fluorescence under the excitation conditions studied. The authors linked its location with anther-tissue changes and considered a possible signalling function. The experiment did not manipulate fluorescence itself while observing insect choices, so its role remains a mechanistic hypothesis. [Ramadoss et al. 2023]
Coloured fluorescent powder was used as a pollen marker to track movement between flowers. No transfer was detected in many flowers. This result describes a specific marker-movement trial alongside observations of visits and organ fertility. [Ramadoss et al. 2023]
Adult genotypes and current regeneration
SNP-marker analysis showed that most adult C. wolfii samples represented distinct genotypes, with a few repeated clones. At the same time, detached segments and young plants of vegetative origin were visible in the field plots examined. Together, the data indicate sexual regeneration in population history and an important role of fragmentation in current observations. [Ramadoss et al. 2025]
In the comparison covering one population each of six species, diversity in C. wolfii resembled that of some bisexual taxa. Interpretation considers ploidy, sample sizes and population history. The study discusses possible restriction of current seed recruitment while allowing episodic seedling appearance. [Ramadoss et al. 2025]
